ISCCM CITY CHAPTER COMPLETES FIRST YEAR.
Guwahati city chapter of Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM) has completed its first year on the 17th of this month.
A small group of doctors of Guwahati city, interested in making the difficult subject of critical care medicine easily accessible to all doctors , took the initiative and were able to get some of the most distinguished and learned doctors (intensivists) to the chapter’s monthly meetings at Guwahati.
It was a great experience to listen to these critical care experts and have an open discussion with them. Teaching the fine points in patient management was their primary objective. Critical care unit is full of machines and gadgets and is a place where patient’s vital functions are regulated by the operator(doctor or intensivist). No two patients are alike and therefore the management becomes individualised, necessitating the need for every critical care provider to be updated , sharp and accurate . The CMEs (Continuing Medical Education) in Guwahati chapter are interactive and updated .Most of the young doctors in the society feel it a blessing to get this opportunity at their own place.
Dr Prakash Shastri , chief of intensive care unit at Sir Gangaram hospital, New Delhi, in one of the monthly meetings of the chapter, gave a detailed presentation on Fungal Sepsis .It was a very brain storming session for the young doctors to get updates from Dr. Shastri.
Dr. Subash Todi, executive member of ISCCM, from Kolkatta is a source of inspiration for most of the young intensivists in the society. He conducted “Antibiotics Stewardship”for the benefit of all young and practicing physicians. Participants learned a lot in judicious prescription of antibiotics .
Dr.Palepu B Gopal’s deliberation on Fluid Management in critically ill patients was also a great learning experience for the young practitioners.
Many illustrious speakers from Guwahati- Dr. Ajit Deka, Dr. Pranab Bhattacharya, Dr. R.J. Talukdar did their best to keep the young members of ISCCM updated and fully informed on various new subjects.
Case presentations from young practitioners formed a regular feature of the monthly meetings.
Every meeting looked like an extension of the class room teaching and the young doctors of the society did all their best to take lessons from visiting faculty and senior friends.
The entire purpose of formation and functioning of the society seems to be fulfilled well. All this has been possible due to vision of some people and cooperation and dedications of the members.
Those in the core group feel it very gratifying to see the acceptance and respect for the local chapter that has developed in the very first year of the chapter’s existence
Another distinct feature of the monthly meetings is the difficult case presentations and discussions in presence of the visiting faculty. Burn, sepsis, poisoning, shock, renal failure tropical infections and ventilator associated complications and their genesis and management were amongst many other cases discussed during the course of monthly meetings. The young doctors from critical care units spread all over Guwahati made it possible for everyone to learn from these cases and improvise their knowledge and skills.
Proper and rational use of antibiotics in critical care medicine is a subject of great clinical relevance in today’s practice of this speciality. It was a great meet during the year when Dr. S. todi, from Kolkata, not only made a presentation on Antibiotics policy but discussed cases from our clinics and took tutorials for the members.
Many of the visiting faculty also made rounds of the critical care wards and spent time with the doctors and nurses.
Keeping the cost of treatment in limits and avoiding unnecessary admission and load on a critical care unit was also eluded in many of the discussions during the meetings.
A very fruitful academic year for the society where more than two third members are new entrants.
To complete the first year, a teaching certificate course was g conducted for both advanced and new practitioners in this subject. The faculty consists of some very dedicated practitioners in critical care drawn across from all over the country.
On 17th Sep. under ISCCM, advanced training on Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care Course, under the directorship of Dr Pravin Amin, from Mumbai, and Dr Shiv K. Iyer from Pune was conducted. Six senior doctors undertook the training successfully.
On 18th and 19th Sep. a two days certificate training course on basics was organised where 26(twenty six) young doctors enrolled.
Under Dr.S.Todi’s directorship, Dr.A.Sarkar and Dr. S. Gupta from Kolkata and Drs.N.Barua,R.Bora,B.Lahkar and V.Sinha,B.Saikia from Guwahati were the faculty for the course. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) would present the certificate to all the candidates who come out successful. This course is also recognised by ISCCM.
The members seek blessings from all to achieve excellence in practice of critical care medicine and bring the best of services to the needy in this part of the country.
